Sanja Lovrenčić
The Year Without a Rabbit
The Year without a Rabbit is the only book Sanja Lovrenčić wrote for young teenage readers. Illustrated by a fourteen year old boy whose adventures were a sort of inspiration for the writer, the novel tells about fencing and friendship, parents' quarrels and rock'n'roll. Discovery of cheese-addiction and too great love for comic-drawing cause the local catastrophe in the life of the young hero and through funny episodes from his school-life reader may joyously detect many instances of duplicity and selfishness of grown-ups.
Put it on - said Žmila.
- You think I feel like changing my clothes right now?
- Please. I never saw anyone wearing something like that.
- It's not something, it's a fencing suit - he said and went, with the suit, to the other room.
Leo was very impressive when he came back. In strange white trousers and jacket, with pale lilac front, white glove on his right hand and a helmet, he stood before Žmila and bowed very knightly. She stood up, took his helmet of, and smacked his cheek.
- That's all very nice - he said dolefully - but I'll never fence again in this suit.
